WHY
#BACKBEETALOO

ECONOMIC CATALYST FOR THE TERRITORY

The NT currently has the highest proportion of working age people in the population of any State or Territory, yet also the highest unemployment rate.

Compared to the national and even the NT average, many of the communities in and around the Beetaloo continue to disproportionally suffer due to lack of investment and employment being made available in the region.

It’s high time to kick-start opportunities in the Beetaloo and the NT.

Through supporting Back Beetaloo you can make a positive statement and help ensure the arrival of new industries and job opportunities to benefit all Territorians.

Spur Manufacturing Opportunities

In addition to being a source of energy, natural gas is a critical raw material used for manufacturing both in Australia and across the globe. Important feed stocks used in several industries such as ammonia are produced with natural gas. In most cases the use of gas cannot be substituted. Common products which require the use of natural gas in their manufacturing process include:

  • Steel
  • Bricks
  • Cement
  • Glass
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Paper
  • Fertilizer

Unlock Cheaper and Reliable Gas

The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) has forecast that the East Coast will face a shortfall of gas in 2023/24 as supplies from the off shore Gippsland Basin continue to decline.

Scarcity of gas supply leads to higher energy prices and puts strain on Australian manufacturers.

By unlocking new sources of gas resources in the Beetaloo Basin, consumers, and manufacturers across Australia will have access to cheap and reliable gas throughout the winter, and ample supplies to be stored during summer.

ACHIEVE NATIONAL ENERGY
INDEPENDENCE

Australia is the only member state of the International Energy Agency to consistently fail to uphold its obligation to have adequate emergency fuel stockpiles.

A combination of rising seasonal demand and maturing supply sources is increasing the risk of gas shortages in Southern and Eastern States by the mid-2020s and this risk has been identified by both the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).

Unless new gas reserves are unlocked, such as those abundantly available in the Beetaloo Basin, Australia risks being dependent on importing gas for our national energy needs.

By backing Beetaloo we can protect our national energy independence.

Deliver an Ultra-Low Emissions Resource

The expanded use of natural gas—as a replacement for coal and petroleum—can help our efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the near- to mid-term.

When production processes are optimised, the use of natural gas produces significantly less green house gas emissions than other fossil fuels.

The peak energy body, the International Energy Agency (IEA), forecasts that to achieve lower global emissions, natural gas production may need to grow to account for a quarter of energy demand by 2040.

Gas resources, such as those in the Beetaloo Basin, create the potential for Australia to be a major global supplier of natural gas to help meet the increasing demand for cleaner, affordable energy over the transition decades to a low emissions future.

Produce New Opportunities for Traditional Owners

The Beetaloo’s development represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to sustainably develop the region, ensuring that Traditional Owners (TOs) have new business opportunities, jobs, and revenue streams benefiting those who live on country.

The major gas explorers have already reached binding agreements with the Northern Land Council and must ensure full and informed consent is received from the directly impacted TOs in order to operate. These are the facts that you will never hear from the anti-gas activists.

Some of these opportunities for local TOs include:

🗸 employment and upskilling opportunities for locals

🗸 work contracts to grow local indigenous-owned SMEs

🗸 royalty payments to Land Councils to secure their financial futures, and

🗸 contributing towards game-changing community infrastructure like Daly Waters Airfield and Elliott Oval.

There is no other industry who will bring this transformative range of benefits to the local community, meaning the young people will have more opportunities to pursue their future on country.
